Construct a gauntlet of enraged hippos that any invader must cross to enter your fortress.

Edit: BETTER IDEA! WAR HIPPOS! RIDE THEM TO VICTORY!

Do you think you could get the hippos mad by stabbing them with really weak spear traps?

Three pages won't be enough. Better capture and start breeding now, bonus points for killing off the weak ones to enhance the line.

You can use cage traps whereever you dwarfs get into conect with the hippo's/crocs It has the added bonus of making shure you can train them. So get a trap and kennel industry going ASAP before they breed to much. Remember if you have a lot of annimals that you are trapping you can delay the farming procces and use meat instead.

Keeping stuff away from your dwarves is easy. Just build a nice narrow choke point in front of your entrance and fill it with cage traps. And if any of your immigrants have hunting/fishing, turn it off. Boring but safe.

Drain the lake and  then fill it with magma.

Well... if I were you I'd:

1) Build up a nice militia group.
2) Send them to their doom slaughter the wildlife bit by bit.
3) Hippo Steaks for the dwarves! OMNOMNOM (Or dwarven chunks for the crocs.)

But I'm sure you'll end up having Fun, one way or another. Good luck. :)
