Desalinization question
« on: June 10, 2010, 09:21:18 am »

So I found a very nice embark zone, only a single aquifer layer (there are almost no non-aquifer places now, it's weird), limestone, a few nice layers underneath with other metals and gems. The only downside is that it's right next to the ocean, so all the water is salty. I embarked with plenty of booze and plan to desalinate some water, but I have a question.

Building a well will take forever if I have to build floor tiles, but bridges are cheap. Does anyone know if bridges and paved roads keep water from becoming salty like floor tiles do?

last I heard, screw pumps distill water

From the description of the event, I think that your copy of Dwarf Fortress was on drugs when this happened. That's surely the only logical explanation for a human werewolf with deadly farts dying from it's own excrement after slaughtering some goblins comrades.

you dont need to have the floor tiles constructed if you want to use a well, afaik well desalinates water on its own

if you are using screw pumps without wells, then yes, you need to build up the whole cistern

if you are using screw pump with a well, dont bother

According to the wiki, wells no longer desalinate water. I know to build a cistern, what I want to know is will road or bridge tiles work as well as floor tiles for keeping the water from becoming salty again?

Dwarves can not drink salt water until it has been desalinated. Water can be desalinated through the construction of a pump that pumps water into a completely constructed cistern. A well no longer desalinates water.

Either way, I'd like to have a nice cistern of drinkable water, as just in case. If you don't pay attention to booze and don't have enough wells, you could end up like this guy: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=58968.0

Donīt want to make a new thread:

Is it like in 40d, so you have to pump twice to desalt or just once?

Just one pump, but the water cannot touch natural tiles. If it touches any unpurified water or natural floor/wall, the entire cistern becomes salty and undrinkable.

In 40d you can simply build a well above the water and they'll be fine, so long as you have enough wells that the dwarves can get a drink before they die of dehydration.

Do what I do. Build a very small, 3x3 wall, floor, well pump set up, get a single dwarf to pump it manually full, when needed, and just use that till, you can devote some dwarfs to the a big well.

there is an image of the goblin Utes Gozrusrozsnus and dwarves in elf bone. The goblin is making a plaintive gesture. the dwarves are striking a menacing pose.
this image relates to the slaying of Utes Gozrusroz

I have built an ocean well, Water was unusable D:
Lost a whole fortress to it. Well dont desalt anymore.
