I never really plan, so I get a huge, fungal mess.
You build your forts from tower caps?

Sometimes, when my Dorfs are exceptionally stupid again, I wonder what exactly the [INTELLIGENT]-tag does.

What are blueprints?

Honestly I never really plan, other than at the room level for some rooms ("I plan to build a power generator or two in here, I'll need 3 floors and a water pipe").

d>d usually

If absolutely necessary I use photoshop.

For 3d planning (A giant statue of a dragon, etc) I use minecraft or rhinoceros.

Nowadays, now that I realize it, I think I plan (in game) much how I did with Wavehandle. If I have any major plans, I draw a basic layout of it, and work at it in stages. Sorta modular-like, though not as flexible as a modular setup. However, regarding city-scape planning and working with lowtowns and such, I would try my best to adapt a form of city-scape modulation. I can tell each area designation by their low-town structure. Think sorta like XCOM bases.

As for above ground structures and such, I never got that far, and I suppose I would require a sort of quarry area designated. Purely a dwarf-made bottomless pit where all the building material is extracted. Other geology stuff would get in the way, so it's just a big ol' pit made. But depending on it's purpose/sourcing it'll vary in scale and shape. Like a 1x1 (actually a size-9 circular pit/quarry) could double as an execution ground ala Spartan-style. It would just be placed out of the way enough not to interfere with the structure of the rest of the city.
