have a way to save our starting dwarf party and items?  it seems like it would be fairly simple, and it would prevent me having to start a whole new party over again every single time it turns out the starting location i picked is actually terrible.  nothing is more aggravating than spending like 10 minutes making the perfect expedition, only to find out i immediately have to do it all over again.

This has been posted many times recently.  I dunno what the plans are concerning it, but I think it's a good idea.

I think this would qualify as low hanging fruit, easy to implement with a reasonably large gain. Isn't there a mod that did this (although at the amazingly awesome rate Toady updates it's a pain to keep mods running ) at least in previous versions?

There was a mod that did this called StartProfile, although it wasn't as useful as it could have been, with not being able to set custom profession names and such.

see i dont like this idea, just because every time i start i take differnt skills / items.

Uhh... that really has nothing to do with this thread. He's requesting an option to save starting profiles; nothing about that prevents you from changing them.

Yes, it would be really nice to be able to save starting profiles.  

Also, loading the profile wouldn't start an embark, it would just put all the skills and equipment into the preparations screen so that you could then make changes and adjustments on a case per case basis (just as if you had entered the skills/equipment in yourself).
