Some very interesting findings...
« on: June 03, 2010, 05:11:20 pm »

Well, I've been experimenting in Arena Mode, and I've found some things that may or may not be common knowledge

a. constructions may be anchored from above
b. The entire top z-level serves as an anchor: basically, it behaves as if there was a floor below it.
c. cave-ins can teleport through constructed floors
d. cave in behavior seems to be different between inside and outside tiles
e. in the event of part c. , water or magma can be displaced through floor tiles without damage.

On part c: They don't teleport. The key word in it is floor. Any floor, natural or constructed, will be broken through by a cave in, unless a wall segment is supporting it directly.
Also, elaborate on d?

Is B implying that if you build a support on the second highest z-level and then removed other support, it would sustain the rest of the floating construction? I would like proof if so, as I doubt it.

C - No, they don't; Sonerohi is correct.

D - Need proof. Won't believe this otherwise.

You can test part C in arena mode by forming a rock wall on the top layer.

Does that transfer to dwarf mode though? I'm pretty sure it doesn't.

True, but at a certain velocity the resulting explosion expels invader-bits at fatal speeds. You don't want to be dropping trogdolyte-shaped shrapnel bombs into your boneworks.
Only in Dwarf Fortress...

Apparently it's a bug: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=1822

Apparently it's a bug very good reason to create a maptile-wide dwarven airship megaproject.

I read someone else posting about the support from the 'ceiling' and immediately ended up thinking that'd be a good way to accomplish a floating island.

Though airships sound very dwarven. Especially airships that can drop globs of magma on invaders.

except that you can't build on the top layer. Now as for D, in arena mode, cave ins on inside tiles seem to be a bit glitchy, and don't always occur when they should. As for the teleporting, they did teleport. The floors were intact, just with rock wall underneath them. if you view it with k- smooth rock block floor. down one z level, rough rock block wall.
