Where is my magma sea? :(
« on: May 23, 2010, 05:44:14 pm »

Hey guys, I'm desparate to find my magma sea but I'm getting kind deep without locating one. I'm at level 143 now and haven't seen any, though I have found 2 different caverns (One went from level 70 to 140). Am I being impatient, or is it possible to miss the sea?

If you haven't yet hit semi-molten rock, KEEP DIGGING.

If you have, look above it. Be prepared to either find the very top of the magma sea or flood the lowest levels of your exploratory staircase with magma.

There are three cavern layers above the magma sea.

Can I get your worldgen info? I'd kill for such a world. I've never gotten more than 70 zlevels.

Keep digging. You'll get there. It's really, really, really hard to miss.

I haven't checked since I'm not doing bugs until after the release (well, I'm doing bugs, in the additive sense).

I don't know how to send worldgen info, but I used the base world generator so I imagine it's more that my preference for embark sites are different than yours. I try to find heavily forested with at least a small mountain and a river. If you still want the info, just point me in the right direction and I can send it along.

The magma sea is pretty much always within 15 z-levels or so from the absolute bottom of your map, so use that to judge.

The worldgen actually has specific parameters for the number of z levels per layer of fun stuffs. Altering those can give you a embark ranging from around 40 z levels to over 300.

It's variable even within a given world, although nobody seems to be able to figure out exactly why or how.

Level 143, in some cases, is not deep enough.
Dig deeper.
If that don't work, dig some more.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

(One went from level 70 to 140).

A single cavern layer crossed 70 z-levels?!

I'd probably just regen a new world after seeing that. It's annoying enough carting magma up 50 z-levels when you only have one cavern layer that's 3-5 z-levels high. I'd never bother if I had multiple cavern layers spanning dozens of z-levels each. Would be a pain in the ass working around the cavern layers too.

There are occasionally pits and chasms. A pit/chasm connects one cavern to another vertically. Depending on the spacing of the caverns a pit/chasm can be a VERY long fall.  :o
