First forgotten beast attack.
« on: May 24, 2010, 12:24:15 am »

So, I'm about about a year and a half to two years into one of my fortresses, I've found adamantine, found a huge cavern, and dug to the magma sea about 30 z levels beneath the surface when my first forgotten beast shows up. I have no military, because I dislike the new setup, I'm lazy, and the only ore I have on the map to make weapons and armor out of is copper. Not two minutes later, a second one shows up. Oh, and they both fly. Currently they are chasing a cat I accidentally sealed off when I walled up the cavern after I accidentally broke into it to discover it. Any suggestions?

One is a flying dimetridon the other was a flying pterosaur. Recruited everyone with at least a novice skill in fighter and sent them after it because it broke into my fort. No casulties. One of my non drafted miners got a solid hit on it, lemme find the screenshot. I got lucky. I was going to do caveins, but they wouldn't stop moving long enough for me to dig an area out.

The prior two pages were full of punches glancing off various body parts.

One of my dwarves is going to butcher it, problem is it weights 12440 dwarf pounds, so it's taking him about a half hour to get to the butcher's shop.

Wait until you see how long it'll take your dwarves to butcher it!

Also, for some reason, a Forgotten Beast always yields a feather(?)

Actually, I don't think this one did, I was constantly rummaging through the stocks pile to try and find the 130+ bones it dropped and I didn't see any. Turns out the other one, the dimetridon has a nasty paralyzing dust attack that spreads out a lot and quickly causes death.

Once the forgotten beasts start coming, your dogs will be lunch and the traps will be ignored.  You had best get at least a squad of axe/swordsdwarfs ready!

As soon as it showed up, I looked up the entry on the wiki for tips and quickly frowned when I saw traps wouldn't work.

Cave-in trap is generally your best bet as a substantial number of them are inorganic, and thus currently unkillable by normal means.  Those that aren't are surprisingly easy to kill it seems, as you apparently found out.

Unless they have a nasty dust cloud attack like that dimetridon did.

I just survived my 1st Forgotten Beast attack [Mace Vs FB]. I usually just wall off the caverns. It was in the caverns with anther Forgotten Beast (made of amber) it took a dip in some Magma and burst out of my under-construction magma-forge depot. It killed 3 of my masons and smashed all if the smelters etc. ( all 12 of them ). Amazingly a single Mace-Dwarf pummelled it to death. The previous Forgotten beast seems to have vanished, whether it just left or was killed by the second one i dunno yet.

Perhaps we got lucky and Dimetrodons are relatively frail.

I *really* need to find some bauxite on that map.

He'll be back, he probably just wandered off the explored area, mine did it all the time. It freaked me out there, I kept wondering if he was eventually going to decide that wall just shouldn't be there and nom everything.

Why bauxite? There's now plenty of magma-resistant stones (dolomite, for example.).

You know that. Right? :P
