Burrowing: Possible or not?
« on: May 22, 2010, 09:43:22 am »

This might seem obvious, but is it in any way possible to make creatures innately able to dig without the aid of picks? No method that I can think of would work, but perhaps a more experienced modder can find some way to manage it.

Nothing can dig that isn't your civ controlled miners.  If you're saying you want them to be able to dig sans pick...

The only thing I can think of would be to try replacing this line in the entity defaults

   [DIGGER:ITEM_WEAPON_PICK]

with something like this

        [DIGGER:ITEM_GLOVES_GLOVES]

It's not exactly what you're looking for, but it should change the digging item to gloves of any type instead of a pick.  I haven't tested this and have no idea if it would work(digging items may HAVE to be weapons, idk).  You're going to need to generate a new world with the change for it to potentially take effect.

Capital idea. I'll try it out and see how it goes.

Well, it hasn't broken the game but dig orders go unfulfilled, despite a surplus of gloves. Do you think it would be possible to make a weapon capable of digging that is very easy to make and made from super-common materials? We are getting further and further away from true burrowing but I'm trying for the best I can.
Any ideas on this are welcome.

Just make a custom workshop that dispenses free picks?

While it does serve the purpose of making digging an easier task to get going, it doesn't quite have the attraction of having a creature dig with it's hands or making special digging gloves for the task. If all else fails, that is still an option.

Well, rename "pick" to whatever you like. "Mining License", "Lantern", "Lucky mining totem", "Security Blanket"

I'm not sure what it is that makes a weapon work as a pick. I guess, it must have to be a weapon that uses the Mining skill, with the appropriate entry in the entity definition.

I am thinking it has to be a weapon because it will eventually work by comparing the weapon to the sheer strength of the rock. for right now that is only used as far as I know to determine if you CAN mine through it, but supposedly someday it will determine how LONG it takes you to mine through it.  If I recall correctly 50,000 shear strength is where dwarfs cannot mine anymore

It's 5'000'000. So over 50'000.
