Erase it all and replace it with web site adresses of helpful material (EDIT: Keep the losing is fun note, tho). Not hard to update, you might have to take a minute every few years to change it. But I quite literally think you could save dozens/hundreds of people who quit from feeling overwhelmed by simply showing the addresses of:

A)The wiki
B)The stickied Completely newby play along tutorials in the gameplay forum
C) Dwarf Therapist

I don't think toady is in control of dwarffortresswiki, so he may not want to rely entirely on that site's continued existence.  But a prominent note about it would be nice, if it's not already there.

Eh, while he's not in control of it, it's still a new user's only option to learn how to play it.  As a workload vs. helpfulness, merely referencing some resources tops the charts.
