A Text Adventure. Because it's really easy to update.
« on: July 21, 2010, 03:26:13 am »

The metal bench is hard. Possibly it was not the best place to sleep, but the concrete floor was no better. You awake in a darkened subway station. There are two metal benches here, a subway route map on the wall, and a set of stairs leading to the station. The only light source is a flashlight, presumably attached to someone walking down the stairs.

You feel slightly ill and sore all over, like you have a hangover and you slept on an uncomfortable metal bench for four or five hours. Also very groggy. It takes considerable effort to prop yourself up to sitting posistion, but once you do you start to feel more awake. So, now what?

Look for an exit.

Right. Woah, the room's spinning. Hold on. An exit, yeah.

There are the stairs leading up to the station, but the approaching person with a torch is that way. Then there's the tunnels leading either way into the darkness. It is VERY dark. The only illumination is provided by the subway route map, which is lit by little colored bulbs. And it's very quiet. The soft swoosh of the draft in the tunnels and the insistent tap of the torch's shoes are the only noises in the station. So, now what?

Look at the torch man closely, what does he look like, does he look aggressive, what do we know of him?

Right. Uhm. Can't really see. He's on the other end of really bright object, so he's not really illuminated. You don't know who he is or what he wants, but to hazard a guess, perhaps he's a security guard or something? Anyways, he hasn't seen you yet.

Hm... We show ourselves to him, he'll likely take us to jail or something.

If we try to hide and/or explore then likely some crazy shit will happen...

Hide somewhere and wait for the right chance to get past the guard, then slowly and silently sneak past him up the stairs.

You don't want to get arrested for sleeping in here. So you crouch down, slide slowly to the side, and then slip under the bench. You watch as the man with the flashlight comes into view, looking from side to side. He seems to be some sort of security guard, wearing a red uniform of some sort with braided shoulder pads. He wears a tired and bored expression under a well maintained black beard. When he wanders past the bench you've hidden under, you crawl out from beneath it and sneak up the stairs.

The station is a pretty bleak affair. A set of turnstiles linked to a token-taking box sits next to a glass booth. The booth contains a large radio playing something imperial very quietly, along with a table. On the table is a sandwich and a mug of cofee. There is a glass double-door leading out into the street beyond.

Slowly and quietly exit through the glass door. If the door is locked, wait on the side of the top of the stairs for the guard and then attempt to knock him out.

You hop over the turnstile, but your trench coat gets caught in it. You take a deep breath and carefully extract the tail of your coat from the stile, and then walk over as fast as your dare to the glass door. Thankfully, it opens onto the street. You're not sure you have the nerve to belt someone across the head hard enough to knock them out, anyway.

The street's sides are pavement and the roads are dirt. Gaslamps light the streets, and multiple wires string along the lamp-posts. The buildings are made in the Georgian style or simple, crude metal boxes riveted together. The subway station has a sign that says "Railway" on it, and across the street the warm glow of a cafe lights the sidewalk. It has an large windowfront, and you can see there is a woman tending to two men in overalls and workman's caps sitting at the counter inside. There is an enclosed patio-like area with little tables and umbrellas on it outside the cafe. On the corner of the street there is a little sandwich-board which declares Ruth's Barbershop is the best place in town for a gentlemen to get his hair cut. So, now what?
