Or maybe, unknown to the rest of the world, they're really the pinnacle of demon-kind! They will infest the world above with both their numbers and their cuddlyness and, once their war against the cats is won, will dominate the surface dwellers as is their birthright!

Yup.  Someone threw one of the little guys at a collosus and got a decapitation.  I believe that they are not unlike the Orz, a single being with many little appendages that look individual, but are not.  Wambler is watching you from many angles.
