Tower City
« on: May 13, 2010, 08:00:51 pm »

Anyone ever done one of these? I decided on a whim to do a tower, and stuck a depot up there with a ramp, and am now working on a wind farm and dormitories, on giant floating floors. For extra Fun caveins are on, and everything is stacked on top of each other, out in each direction from a 3x3 tower.

I have *something* like that, but instead of towers I use hollowed out pillars in large cavern. Pretty cool. Also all dwarfen rooms span more than one z-level - there are two- and even three-level apartments.

How do you assign the room across multiple z-levels? That's gotta make getting an Opulent room or w/e HARD.

Well, it's not a room spanning several z-level but an entire apartment. Usually it's dining room on the first floor, bedroom on the second (lower), sometimes followed by some other room (such as study).

That sounds extremely dorfy. I am going to attempt it right now.

I once built a huge tree-shaped structure out of stone (partly to prove that dwarves are better than elves). The trade depot was at the base, chains of screw pumps took water and magma to reservoirs in the lower main body, with workshops above them, stockpiles and accommodation above that, etc. The original plan was to put windmills on the top to power the pumps but unfortunately the map had no wind so I kind of cheesed it with a river-spanning waterwheel array.

Unfortunately with all the construction I hadn't managed to get any sort of military running by the time goblin ambushes began, and they slew the whole population.

Maybe I'll try it again with the new version.

Worked on a big ol' tower for some 40 dwarf years or so. Well, no, the fortress lasted 40 years before I decided I was done with it and I was only working on the tower for about 15-20 of those years.

The workshops are in the basement, the bedrooms are in the base, and the fancy bedrooms are in the bit halfway up where it widens out a bit. The baron lives at the top, the queen and the other nobles live off on the mountain to the left.
