Wrath of Earth.
« on: May 18, 2010, 01:30:57 am »

Recently I've found out thanks to a friend about Wrath of Earth. It's... Well a game that sets the player against an army of robots and mutated colonists controlled by aliens. While this sounds like normal fps fare it takes mesures to really make the player feel like they're in a suit of power armor, there's different visor modes, lots of built in weapon systems, a competent auto map, and of course a communicator so mission control can contact you. In the same way unlike a lot of games from around the time a real effort was put in to make the maps feel like where they are. Every place you go to can be reasonably assumed to be a workplace or something, and some areas even have signs to mark what they are. Well above and beyond what a lot of shooters from 1995 had.

Though, a relitive lack of marketing and an outdated  but still workable engine kept it from getting any renown or word of mouth. And it faded into obscurity.

Has anyone else here played this? Or even heard of it? If not go check it out. Thankfully it's obscure but not too hard to find around.

Oh man...  I think I saw this game a long long time ago, on my friend's 486, but I could be confusing it for another game.  I know it I remember seeing it a not-as-long time ago on another abandonware site.  It looks kinda like the 3D sections in Albion, or that Genesis Jurassic Park game.

As much as I want to play it, it won't run.  It says I need more EMS, in DOSBox or out.  I've had this problem before, and solved it by maxing the program memory settings, but it still won't work.  Suggestions?

Dosbox config file, set xms and ems to false.

Make sure to run the setup file before playing as well, in order to get the sound to work. Also apparantly you do not want to set the controls from the setup file, but rather do it in game.

That did the trick.  Man this game is great, and looks like it'd take a long time to beat.  I love that the interface can be controlled Daggerfall-style, even if it's a little clunky.  The atmosphere, styling, and tiny viewing angle make it feel really threatening, but so far my rather inept dodging hasn't actually cost me any damage.  I'll bet it gets harrowing later on.  The accents are a little off-putting though.  They're too relaxed and southern.

I wonder if gender selection has any effect at all beyond chestplate size.

That looks seriously awesome!  Although...sadly, after my recent experiences with Marathon and even Hexen, I'm afraid that my taste for pre-Quake-era FPSes has kind of gone sour.  :(

I'd love to see a game like that with a modern engine.
