I think every dwarf in my fortress has the cleaning labor enabled. My fortress is filthy, but I don't think I've ever seen a dwarf clean up. Considering the outbreak of forgotten beast extract induced fever, I'm interested in knowing how to get my dwarves to clean. The wiki has nothing except for the 40d article. Yes I have wells, and yes I have designated them a water source.

They won't clean rough floors and walls, try smoothing them. Smoothing them should clean them anyway, though it spreads it too.

Also, cleaning is an extremely low-priority task, somewhere below "eat dirty, oily rags". They won't do it if they can find positively anything else to do.

i checked again, and I did see one of my dwarves cleaning, out of the 20 with 'no job.' Is it possible that there is only one active cleaning job at a time?

Dwarves seem to clean more if there's soap in the fortress. Having soap causes problems of it's own.
