What on earth am I doing wrong? [Pumps!]
« on: May 11, 2010, 07:16:21 pm »

Hey, I've been trying to figure out what I've been doing wrong for about an hour and a half now. I'm sure it's a simple thing I'm forgetting, but I just can't work out the problem.

Ok, so I've been creating an underground irrigation system, siphoning water off from the river with a sluice and floodgate system into the farmlands-to-be. That worked fine, I've controlled the river flow and everything, but now I have to pump the water up. I have an area hollowed out of the mountainside, with a waterwheel and axles coming from the river. So I've connected that to the pumps, and cool, the pumps are turning.

But no water is coming out. The pumps are positioned on the z-level above the flooded fields, directly above them as a matter of fact. I've tried putting floor grates at the source, floor hatches, but nothing I do can get the pumps to start actually pumping.

What am I missing here?

Are you sure the pump is facing the right way?

Is the pumps input tile stairs or ramps? It must be open space.

I'm almost positive the pump is facing the right way. The light-colored X was directed towards the grate/hatch.

But what precisely is meant by this "open space"? And how can I produce this?

So I'm really tired, but I'm going to give a quick run down on pump operation and hopefully that'll help you.

Code: [Select]
Legend
O - wall
W - water (X/7)
~ - water on the z level below
X - pump
' ground/floor
V Water output
Z Level -1

WOOOO
WOOOO
WOOOO

Z Level 0
Set the pump to "Pump from West"

~''''
~XXV'
~''''

I think that power can be applied to either X in the pump.

Open space can be created using... the old channelling, or new channelling then remove a ramp below the pump location ('behind' the Xs)

The level below doesn't have to be all walls, but typically that's the setup a pump will use. As long as the pump is supported and pathable, it should work.

If you're trying to force the water through a grate, you'll want Z-level 0 to look like this:
Code: [Select]
~'OOO
~XX#'
~'OOO
That is, force the water where you want it to go, otherwise it'll just spill everywhere.

For a floor grate, add a wall at the end too to keep the water trapped - it won't "jump" outside the walls.

'k' over a tile of water so that you can see the water level listed on the right.

Then go up one level and that same tile is now labeled 'Open Space'. The source side of the pump needs to be adjacent to this square.
