How in the bloody HFS pit do I minimize z-levels!?!
« on: May 10, 2010, 10:17:16 pm »

I need a reasonably small z level range... how?

Interesting theory. You sound like an Elf...trying to minimize (to the extreme) my Dwarven expansion.

And magma isn't a pathologically extreme method of resolving "The Elf Problem"?  Extreme is what dwarfiness is all about!  :)

Seriously, due to the new nature of world gen, I don't know that you can minimize the Z-levels too much.  Unless you want something like:

'd'->'j'->'enter'->'enter'->'esc' *wait a few seconds* FUN!!!

Have you ever wondered about the relationship between Carp and Dwarf? I wonder what happened to Carp to make them such evil creatures... I want to find a way to breed carp for war. If only I made them pets and trainable... now that's an idea.

I'm surprised nobody's pointed this out by now, but the worldgen parameters includes either five or six settings dedicated to altering the size of the underground, from number of caverns to how deep the caverns are and whatnot. I think you can erase HFS as well, making the final impassable layer semi-molten rock. But you'll need to gen a new world for these parameters to take effect.

Thanks Retro... what are the settings in the parameter screen?

As in precisely what are the settings?

I'd guess the cavern layer settings, setting the cavern layers to none will remove them, removing the bottom layer will remove the HFS, I guess, and tweaking with the 'layers above' (or something like that) settings can change the amounts of Z-levels between the features. Just try tweaking with those settings.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

of course, you could just not dig below 15 z levels down....

Edit: Wouldn't you know I'd run into a 9 z level tall cavern right after I said that. And of course it's only 10 z levels below the forest floor.... :P

15- 20 z levels is enough for me... I'm just starting df 31, I tried before it was just too slow... that's why
I'm asking.

[CAVERN_LAYER_COUNT:1]
[LEVELS_ABOVE_LAYER_1:1]
[LEVELS_ABOVE_LAYER_2:1]
[LEVELS_ABOVE_LAYER_3:1]
[LEVELS_ABOVE_LAYER_4:1]
[LEVELS_ABOVE_LAYER_5:1]
[LEVELS_AT_BOTTOM:1]

Those should be all the relevant ones. I set all mine to 1. I think this means there isn't going to be too much rock and so on before my first layer (ignoring layers 2-5 since I have those caverns disabled), and then I may or may not have HFS based on LEVELS_AT_BOTTOM, but I don't really know what they all do to be honest. Those are the ones you'll want to play around with, anyhow.

ed- Here's more info (http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Advanced_world_generation) but I'm not sure if it makes all that much more sense. For what it's worth...

If you turn Cavern_Layer_Count to 1 it'd be a good idea to change [UNDERGROUND_DEPTH:X:Y] on all the subterranean creatures and plants to something like 1:4 to ensure that you have them available to you.
