Wood decay, has it been suggested before?
« on: February 03, 2008, 02:17:00 pm »

Has anyone suggested adding in wood decay. Or is it already planned?

Or has i already been decided not to use it.

I searched in the forum for wood decay, and i saw no topics, so thats why i'm posting.

Im not too bright on wood decay, but i would have to say the best place for the bactira that eats wood to survive in would be something wet, cool and damp. Like a underground fortress  :)

Termites and wood burrowing ants would be cool too. it seams whenever i split some of our wood theres some kind of bug burrowed or squeezed in there(gota watch out for them big ass black ants). iv even found some kind of centipedes or millipedes in there they where pinkish yellow(if i remember correctly) and all huttled together.

..... OH ya it would be cool if some bugs ran out from the wood if it sat for to long or even started to eat it away(when partial use of materials goes in(?))...

I would imagine that wood would begin to decay if left where it was felled, or in a damp area. Infestations of termites or weevils or what have you could potentially destroy beds, wreak havok on even 'safe' indoor wood stockpiles, etc. I like it.

Well i was thinking that a new skilled could come about.

Wood Repairing, Stone Repairing.

Over time wood rots and stone, well usually plants will grow into stone and crack them.

Someone could have wood repairing and stone repairing skills, this person would fix any problems with wood or stone.

And also, yes those wood eating bugs is a great idea, i didn't even think of that!

Id assume a option would be made to turn wood rot and stone decay off. Im sure not all people would be happy with that. I would like it because it would make things more realistically to having to live in a dwarf fortress, brings a bit more depth in the game when you have to acctally upkeep your fort.

Right now nothing needs upkeep it doesn't seem, i haven' gotten past my first year yet tho, still learning.

This would be a nice idea, if we had more direct control over being able to control what areas would be considered damp. If you mean just muddy or bloody, well, dwarves track that everywhere. If we could have a job where dwarves grab themselves mops and buckets and head out to clean or mop up some excess 1/7 to 2/7 water then it wouldn't be a problem. I don't like the idea of currently existing constructions decaying without maintenance. I think that would be a bit of an unnecessary complication

This would require a fundamental overhaul of how vermin work. Most notably, the ability to manufacture pesticides to proof areas against vermin and code related to eliminating those vermin from those areas. As it stands, vermin now simply appear inside your stockpiles, this might have to change.
