A handy naming convention -- syllables
« on: May 10, 2010, 01:28:59 am »

In order to search through my dwarves, I've come up with a naming convention that's been working pretty good for me.

Ordinary humble worker-bee type dwarves keep their randomly generated name
Soldier dwarves, which I need to be able to pick out of the list frequently, get names with one syllable. Dan, Frank, Kate, Steve, Claire
Nobles get names with two syllables. Daniel, Erik, Betty, Marcus
And 3+ syllables are for special people.

Then I can tell if someone important died from the last wave of aggressors, and who to replace :)

I've been doing the same thing with my military.

Instead of using human names though, I've been basing them off words in their name or things that they liked.

For example, my swordsdwarf with a name meaning "Calldragons" got the nickname "Draco", and my crossbowoman who liked chimeras got the nickname "Chimera".

I just give important people names as I feel fit, on a whim really, but almost always a name I'm familiar with unless I feel otherwise. I suppose naming nobles after their most hate-able liking in terms of my ability to provide for it in their demands is a great idea.
I once named a little girl Electrum because a noble wanted Electrum all the time, and I'd already named him Jimmy Carter for the way he performs his job. She was my little reminder of what needed to be asked for and bought from the traders every year.
Zon was just named zon, so he stayed zon, but with apostrophes to make him seem important.
All the legendary dwarves get named, usually according to their profession/the material used on the item that made them legendary.

Soldiers from now on will get named after they've survived a battle and made a kill, taking the name of that first kill in behind their own. Zon kil'Ngokang. Willow kil'Thilu. dorfy.  8) Anyone that kills a group leader takes that leader's name.

I just name people with their profession I want them to lay in CAPS, so I know it's not what their default is.  Screw individuality :P

I just leave the names to their default and rename their profession.  Hauler, Smith, Animal Handler, M - Sqd 1, Craftdwarf, etc.

I call everyone 'Bob.'

This may have been part of why my military was so slow to respond to anything.

I give my useful dwarves a custom title.  My brewer becomes Brewski, Cook becomes Cookie, etc.  When looking for draft material, I'll give them the title of Guard or Milita or whatever so I can easily spot who gets drafted to what squad when I make them.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Yeah, in reality, I look at every migrant and assign them names based on their destined role.

In 40D, I was very careful about who could use the forges (since the DM was very fond of jumping in for armor and weapon production), so I gave all the metalworkers titles like 'Arm','Weap','Smith',McCraft', so I could find them decently quickly in the workshop profile screens.
So if I needed more metal workers, I could assign a new peasant a metalworker title and have them make a few things, then let them work as a farmer/hauler while waiting for a fey mood.

Now, I'm mostly using squad-based stuff based on military skillsets. Commander, captain, mil1,mil2, etc. So I can keep the squads sorted out.
