World Gen inquiry
« on: May 09, 2010, 11:48:30 am »

Is there a way to generate a world with islands small enough to fit in a (for example) 10x10 area (or more optimally, 5x5 or 6x6), so that basically my entire island is a single city-fortress?

There was a thread that had a lengthy list of worlds with small islands in 40d, but I don't know if anybody's come out with a list them in the new version yet. If I recall correctly, the smallest viable island found was something like two embark tiles long and one wide.

That happens every so often, but I don't know of any specific settings to guarantee such an island. It usually happens in lakes rather than oceans though so jacking up the number of rivers might be a good start. A Large Island might be a good choice as well since it'll give you plenty of ocean squares to comb through. If I happen to run across such a location in one of my existing worlds, I'll post the World Gen info for you.

I was experimenting with this just the other day. Used world painter, saved the settings, then modified the height data in world_gen.txt by manually editting the fields. Incremented by units of 8 such as:
Code: [Select]
[PS_EL:0:8:0:8...
[PS_EL:0:0:0:0...
[PS_EL:0:16:0:16...
[PS_EL:0:0:0:0...
[PS_EL:0:24:0:24...
[PS_EL:0:0:0:0...
...
[PS_EL:0:256:0:256...
...thus creating a spotting of islands in a grid. After hitting 108 or so islands started popping up, but the dimensions of the islands were roughly the same, despite the elevation differences. So, effectively theres no way to guarantee or even force small islands to appear. It's just down to luck of the draw.

Hope this helps :)
