I spent a few minutes checking and can give some quick pointers.

1- You have a large amount of weapon assigned to be melt. Those don't count as available weapon. The melting is also bugged right now, so this probably explain the crashes you've had. I stopped all melting jobs and the fortress is still currently running without issues.

2- The arsenal dwarf was attending a party. That's not acceptable. Never. Especially not with under equiped militia during a siege. After freeing the meeting hall, he proceded to update stockpile records. That's not acceptable either. Changing the bookkeeping setting to lowest made go eat... damn dwarves. So basically, you either need to prepare troops ahead of time (i.e. not when goblins are at your gate) or babysit the arsenal dwarf so actually do his damn job.

3- Stockpiling isn't an issue, just an annoyance. Forbidding everything outside and changing the forbid order (o, F) should minimize cancelation spam.

4- The reasons goblins aren't moving in is that they follow their leader. A caged leader means the squad will stick around the trap unless there's an enemy close (also true, somewhat, with wildlife). It isn't because they can't see your dwarves or whatever. Units are omniscient (yet stupid) in DF; if there's a path they KNOW it.

Not much to say about the fortress. You make good use of z levels, which is seldomly the case with new players. Efficiency is greatly improved by proper use of the z axis. There's a few things I could add, but that are mostly a question of play style/preference. Like the fact you have few bedroom created, which is usually something high in my priority list. Nothing strikes me as bad design or planning... that's more than I can say about my own fortresses  :-[

edit: BTW, I let the game run while I was typing and it didn't crash after over 2 seasons (and no, my computer isn't running fast, I type slowly). Melting was most likely the problem.

I'm pretty much a noob :

I'm having the same problem!  Really frustrating... just as a test, I forged a bunch of iron helmets and iron battle axes, but when I goto equip each individual in the squad to "specific weapon" or helm, none of my forged items show up.  I do have an arsenal dwarf too.  My silver battle axe that a migrant brought in shows up, but none of my crap forged crap does.

Oh wow, that's a great help, thanks so much!

So my plan on buying anything steel and melting it isnt going to work then? Lol
I assigned the melting when I realised nothing could be equipped!
That's alot of help! I'll tell them to stop and see if it helps me!
That makes sense with the goblins! Will they leave eventually if I don't kill them?  Thanks for your critique too! :D

The "problem" with the goblins sounds like you have trapped in a cage their group leader. The rest of the goblins follow their leader, just like a Dog's puppies follow her. If you cage the mother dog, the puppies will hang around the cage (or if the mother dog gives birth in the cage, the puppies will not be caged, but hang around the cage holding their mother).

The weapon issue sounds like you need an arsenal dwarf. Your arsenal dwarf needs his own office, and should have no other jobs to perform (or, at most, be your manager as well). It is best if they start with some level of bookkeeping as well. While bookkeeping will help train up your arsenal dwarf, you need to swap them out of bookkeeper spot, as the bookkeeping will consume much of their time, leaving less time for them to do the job of arsenal dwarf (that is, put into the arsenal record the weapon or equipment so it is available to military dwarves).

learn to give consolations to frustrated people
What is this, a therapy session? We don't need to console someone because they're upset about a fucking video game. Grow a beard, son, and take off those elf ears!

yep! it's all fixed now. It was indeed my mistake assigning the asenal dwarf to also be the bookkeeper.

He's just the arsenal dwarfnow, and straight away he started updating the records. I have lots of weapons now! I thought he just gave the dwarves what they needed, I didn't know he actually noted all the weapons available.. like a bookkeeper for the military.

VERY important lesson learned!! my dwarves will actually train now! (while the goblins wait patiently outside for them (thanks to cage stasis technology)) :D

and the crashing bug was indeed due to melting! I'm so happy I posted here, as I was about to abandon and start a fresh one!

It's a shame though, because I have ALOT of weapons I don't need, and I bought loads of worthless metal object from caravans soley to melt for weapons :(

The problem I think I made was I assigned a military unit also as an arsenal dwarf (only makes sense right?  That's how it was in the Army anyways).  I will try to create an arsenal dwarf that does nothing but account for equipment and see what happens...
