Hunter wont Hunt
« on: May 05, 2010, 08:46:21 pm »

So I've got crossbows, I've got bolts.  One of my founding 7 is a proficient ambusher.  I've set his labors to have nothing but hunting, but he won't go get the crossbows and bolts out of the stockpiles (which he can get to, he's carried bolts to the stockpile when I had hauling on) and go hunting. He's got my hunting dogs following him around, but he just hangs out in the river and drinks.

Hunting is broken in 31.03.

You need to disable and then reenable hunting in game. This will cause him to reload, but you have to do this each time he runs out of ammo. He will not reload on his own.

Would setting them as hunters via labor menu by chance be a workaround for the "marksdwarves dont carry ammo" bug or would they just go unload the bolts when they pick up their military gear?  I'd test it myself but since I'm not really sure what I am doing yet my data wont be too convincing...

Dooz de dwarf haf de quiver? He needs de quiver. That's seriously the biggest problem people are having getting hunting to work with the new version, it seems. Mind you, it doesn't work well, even once it works, but that tiny change from 40d seems to be throwing everyone off.

Also, bugger hunting, make a squad of axedwarves out of loose population and have them run around killing the wildlife. Much more efficient.

Also, you have to assign hunters ammo in the military screens.

To get hunters to hunt, you must:
  • assign ammo to hunters in military screen (Ammunition)
  • have quivers for hunters
  • have an aresenal dwarf assigned that actually does work (once arsenal dwarf is around) so hunters can get ammo (I think)

I know the first two are correct. I've often had to reassign the ammo to get hunters to START HUNTING AGAIN, once they run out of their initial ammo. So it isn't as simple as it used to be. I am pretty sure the only times I've been able to get hunters to "reload" was when I had an arsenal dwarf that actually worked as well, but I have not yet observed this in 31.03 (been busy with other things so far).

What is this, a therapy session? We don't need to console someone because they're upset about a fucking video game. Grow a beard, son, and take off those elf ears!

Yes you need a quiver, and yes you need to assign them ammo in your military screen. But there is a bug in that the pick up ammo task is only ever done once, when you enable the hunting job.

This means you need to continually disable/enable the hunting job or they will not pick up ammo again.

This is why I stuck with 40d. At least, until things like this are fixed.

Call me human, but I like my hunters.

Normally a decent axedwarf in my forts racks up about 10-15 kills before the goblins or giants get him (I play relentless), whereas I have had a hunter who finally was killed after taking down close to 150 elephants. The fact he lost 9 dogs in his lifetime is beside the point.

Man, how does anyone hunt with axedwarves. I know my dwarves are always too damn slow to catch up with anything on foot. Is it because they're all so fat?

Well, the easy way is to mod your dwarves to be faster than the animals, kuhuhu. Making them stone spitters works rather well too, kehe, though that likes to mess with melee combat a bit, I think. Vaguely remember boss toad saying he had/will change solid_glob breath to not chaingun quite so much, which would fix the melee thing.

Barring that, having two squads and chasing them into (perhaps constructed) corners/dead-ends/each other works just fine, once you get a handle on how the critters react. Obviously, getting a hold of that old benny hill music to play when you send your hunting squads out makes the whole process much more enjoyable.

Of course, just having high agility dwarves should work, too. Vanilla dwarves can chase down most animals, but only after they're a bit faster than baseline. Look for your high agility dwarves to assign or train up for hunting squads, yeah.
