Groundwork for a new poll
« on: May 04, 2010, 01:22:49 pm »

I am soon going to be starting a new poll. this one will be about measuring the epicness of a thread, but i need to know what people think constitutes and epic thread.

so far i have as options:

a. length
b. content
c. awesome post to total post ratio
d. ambition
e. completion of goals

or some combination of the above.

if you can think of other factors that need to be considered let me know and i will include them. poll starts either tomorrow or wednesday.

Once you try and measure a popular social consensus, you'll find its popularity is going to cut out pretty quickly. It's the same with humour. General assent trumps "I hereby deem this to be good based on this criteria" any day.

Averge epicness of the top 20% most epic posts in the thread, times the square root of the number of posts total.

I think the wood pun thread on the adventurers board has been the best in recent history.

But i don't think there is a point to trying to rank these.

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.

i am not trying to rank anything, just asking what you think makes good threads. what is important to you? can a short hilarious thread make the rankings of epic in your opinion, or does the qualification require massive amounts of posts? if so what if most of that lengs is just filler posts like "lol" and "+1" type posts, does that dilute the epicness?

i relies this is not a serious poll, just a sort of fun "what do you think" but after the save comapt and feces votes i wanted to do something that was not serious.

I would say its generally just the sum of each posts epicness, but each thread has its own considerations.  The pun pyramid thread is extra awesome because it just appeared for no reason and just kept on going, the plump helmet man threads are extra awesome because they are about eating sentients, the automated butchery machine things are extra awesome because of how practical and clever it is, community fortresses are judged mostly on their most awesome few moments (you all remember postwar East/West Headshoots and flooding the world with magma).
