Already got the first from GOG so I think I'll wait for them to get released there - they're listed on the Coming Soon list.

I want SM for the random map generator.

Seems age of wonders: shadow magic is the third one, despite what my brain thought when reading the the list. These games any good? I heard links to master of magic but not sure if that was just marketing or people really thought that.

Shadow magic, at least, is bloody solid. Easy match for Heros of Might and Magic series, even ignoring the crappy run they had around, what was it, three, four? Never played the other ones, though. You could probably draw some connections to MoM, yeah, but it's been too long since I've played either to remember what those connections are, heh. Some similarities in how some of the magic plays out, maybe. I recommend SM, at the very least, if you can stand fantasy 4x stuff.

And yeah, shadow magic is the third, more or less. Iirc, it's basically the same-ish engine as AoW:II, just with new junk and like an additional plane (Th'shadow plane, go figure.) to play with.

I have Shadow Magic since years along with Heroes of Might&Magic 3 and Disciples 2 in the same genre.
Truly fantastic games even now as i continue to play with them from time to time.

On the 3 Age of Wonders game, prefer the last one, Shadow Magic, if you can only buy one, the most feature complete version of the game and the most interesting (and has a huge modding content too).

I definitely recommend getting Shadow Magic if you're only getting one. I haven't played the others, so I'm not sure how different they are. One question, though: There's an unofficial but very well done (and I THINK actually promoted by the company that made AoW, too) patch that adds units and balances the races. Is this patch (patch 1.4) supported/included with the Steam/Impulse/GoG versions?

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.
