Can I catch them at all, how? Or are they part of the fishing problem? I ask because a dwarf of mine is possessed and needs some shells (though, hopefully he can last until spring, since it is winter and the pools and ocean is frozen [except where I am pouring magma]).

They can be caught via fishing, yes.

They should be one of the most common things you can fish for. Presumably, the fishing bug (i.e. fish not seeming to exist in many places) applies to them too, though.
