The Ability to Engrave Doors
« on: May 15, 2010, 09:48:31 am »

Just so you know, I searched through before I posted this. Found nothing.
Well, as a DF player, I would like the ability to engrave stone doors. My dining room wouldn't be complete without an engraved door. And those useless bastards nobles would always like an engraved door to complement their completely-engraved room.

Definitely. Engraving a dwarf's coffin with his heroic deeds would be grand indeed.
Engraving a "Magma terrific" lever with gold bars will make your nobles even happier to pull the lever!

You can decorate with gems, and it seems obvious that one might decorate with stone (import goods and artefacts can be), though there's no UI to make it happen yet.  But there is a simplicity to just decorating the already-place furniture, using designations.

Is there not an [Engravable] tag in the ini files to allow modding for items??

rather than doors, I'd like to be able to engrave blocks or placed walls.  If I make a dining room with gold pillars and platinum walls, I'd like to spruce things up a bit with some stick man drawings on them.

Maybe automatically engrave coffins with a likeness of the dwarf laying within? Or perhaps how s/he died?

Should be able to engrave bones, and ivory as well. And etch gems/glass for that matter.

I want the ability to make tablets from stone, and engrave them with runes (and then adorn them with cow hide and menacing spikes  :D ). The possibilities are endless.

I would generalize here and say that we need to be able to make appropriate decorations for any sort of object, just like how we can have images woven into cloth objects. For that matter, it would be nice to hang/attach cloth images to non-cloth objects as well, but that gets into the issue of an item having more than one material, one of which is much more subject to wear and tear than the other.

Urist McCrafter died of dehydration. He spent his last moments locked in his workshop, screaming for shells.

Does no one read The List of Toady anymore? He already wants that.

I suspect that extending the crafting and decorating system is in the works as well.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.
