Legacy of old habits, from back when trays didn't do that.  Besides, as cheap as those things are, I'm always afraid I'm going to snap it strip the gears or something.

Bingo.

Personally, I think whoever came up with the disk drives that are just slots deserves to be shot.
Those things are the single most evil thing ever when it comes to eating disks and breaking.

Yes, but reaching that is less convenient then just pushing the tray a bit.

Also, don't most computers have an "eject" option?
That just gave me the mental image of an eject seat hooked up to a computer. Followed by an annoying non-computer user messing with the button: "What's this ddoooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!" *crunch*

I need an eject option for my computer >:)
