First off, good luck getting fire imp leather.

Secondly, it will help.  Sort of.  But probably not in the way you think.

Fire-resistant materials will not catch on fire (doi), so they won't be able to sit there and scorch away the flesh of your dwarves as they idle about with a flaming shirt.  It won't do much to prevent the usual transference of heat that causes fire damage though.  It will still help out a little, but the difference isn't much to write home about.

But in any case, fireballs and the like are remarkably ineffective in this version.  Only dragonfire continues to be awe-inspiring in its destructive capability.

Ah.  Well, in that case, REAL good luck to you getting fire imp leather...

The answer remains the same though.  Except it will be even less effective.
