So I recieve a notification telling me that a Swordsdwarf has arrived, along with a second notification about a caravan.

I zoom to the Swordsdwarf's location and all I see is his corpse! (and all his equipment)

My question is: what the hell happened there?

If you're playing DF2010, hit "r"  for reports and try and find one about a swordsdwarf. This will likley give you an explination of what happened, otherwise it's a bug where military dwarves arrive dead

yeah, no reports. according to the units list, he was the outpost liason.

it's a shame his upper body is missing.

For some reason, all dead animals are missing their upper body. Known bug.

Once you're done with the fort, you can check your legends and see what caused his death. Likely it was due to old age.

if you get a message saying that a ~dwarf has arrived, it means that a liason arrived (at least that happened for me)

dont know if he is eager to fight, that might be the reason why he is dead
