Militia Commander
« on: April 28, 2010, 05:04:53 pm »

This is my third spectacularly failing fortress and I still haven't figure out one thing about the military.

I've followed everything in this tutorial:
http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Military_guide

I designate a leader (the only member at the moment), an alert, designated barracks, equipment, and a schedule with every other month off. The icon for the dwarf never changes into military style. The only time I ever got them to do something was using squad orders to kill something. They then switch into army mode (icons and all), and run after whatever I tell them to kill. When I cancel the kill order, they switch back to a peasant and are really annoyed at being relieved of duty.

did you enable Training at the barracks? (q) over it and hit (t)

also see my sig for a simplified military setup

also occasionally, there are certain dwarves who just will not train under any circumstances. not sure what affects this or any workarounds. if you're sure everything is set up as it should be, and you make a different dwarf your commander / give him some equipment, and he starts training, then the problem was that first dwarf.

Hmm, it worked on a different dwarf.

For some reason the peasants (even with weapon skills) don't want to become active members. This is my second peasant that refused to enter service.
