how important is save compatibility?

I don't care at all, break save compat every bugfix if it means faster development

I'm quite glad to see "I don't care about save compatibility" as the highest vote by far. Hopefully Toady will read this and can throw out random new releases of even just single features as he goes with the previous feature's bugfix and so on and so on. The real downside for me is that visualizers and utilities will have trouble keeping up, but hey.

If I want to keep using a certain save I will play it in the version in which the save was made; Maintaining comparability shouldn't have a negative effect on the game's development.

Skimming over the replies, it seems that no one mentioned the one aspect I talked about in the sister thread:

Save compatibility is as much guaranteed as any feature in the game - that is, there can be bugs that only affect saves that have been transferred from an allegedly compatible version. Besides frustrating the players, these bugs will also clutter the bug reports as people may forgot to mention that they transferred the save, or if they do mention it, ANY bug report they make as the first person will be held in doubt as it might be just a save comp issue.

Thus, I consider save compatibility a false promise.

Personally, I make a completely clean slate with every update.

I voted for "i like save compat, but its not a deal breaker. break it every few months", yet I would say, by all means, break save compatibility much more often if it means better, faster bug fixes. I agree with the "i like save compat, but its not a deal breaker." at least. :D
Sure, I like save compatibility with newer versions, but if it's not compatible with the next release, so be it! Perhaps I should have voted for the first option..

i must say, i am kinda surprised by the distribution. it looks like the "extremes" in the community are at options 1 and 3, with anything lower than tat just being an outlier. very weird looking curve, unlike the poo curve earlier. do we have any statitions in the crowd that could tell us what the standard deviation is for this is? i would be curious to know, but i am to lazy to try and remember how to do it myself.
