Your not playing on VH battle difficulty right? The EB devs don't recommend that as it unbalances all their hard work.

How does EB balance the horrificness of the AI? IIRC the only way for RTW to pose a slight challenge was by using the Alexander EXE (minorly improved AI) and mainly, by creating scripted scenarios, whereby the AI can be gifted some semblance of actual intelligence.

It doesn't but setting VH battle difficulty basically means that even the cheapest troops can destroy your elites. Campaign should be set to VH according to the EB devs (But I prefer M)

Pretty much. I remember in BI, my cataphracts were owned on VH when fighting archers in melee, which only had a ~4 attack. But the match is basically over once you outflank the AI; a few rear cavalry charges when the two lines meet and the entire army routs.

Anyway, it does get annoying having to rely on maneuvering/surprise tactics, so I used to set battle difficulty on medium or hard when playing a mod that threw 1-2 armies at you every turn. SPQR for instance.

Yes, you should play on Campaign difficulty: Very hard and battles set to medium. That way the good balance isn`t changed.
