I'm usually constantly expanding my fortress with some large projects like huge halls. I keep stone hauling turned off for the miners or otherwise they stop mining every other second to haul stones away. But when miners don't carry those stones away, someone else has to do it. Usually it's some craftdwarf, mason or carpenter who won't get anything done because they're too busy hauling rocks. I could turn they're stone hauling off, but then someone else would have to stop his job to move those stones.

That's way I'm suggesting there would be an option in orders menu to make only miners to haul stones. Similar to only farmers harvest. That way I could give keep hauling off when they dig and turn it to 'only miners haul' when they have finished digging. Nobody else would have to bother to haul and miners would have something useful to do between new diggins.

You already have finite control over who hauls stone and ore though - it's not a general task that everyone does by default like harvesting is.

If you want to toggle your miners on and off, disable the stone hauling on everyone but the miners, and just toggle "ignore minerals" on and off when you want the miners to do it.

You know, I wonder how I didn't think of that myself. I feel a bit dumb now. Well thank you very much, that really helped me a lot.

It's just going to take a while to go through all 80 dwarfes.
