Gaah! The underworld is collapsing!
« on: April 21, 2010, 09:28:32 pm »

So I just embarked on some mountain to test out some things for my cuisine mod. The first thing that happens, before my dwarves even move, is an announcement pops up: "A section of the cavern has collapsed!" Okay... I press space to unpause.

"A section of the cavern has collapsed!"
"A section of the cavern has collapsed!"
WHY?!
"A section of the cavern has collapsed!"
"A section of the cavern has collapsed!" x69
WHAT IS THIS I DONT EVEN

Now I've gotta send my dwarves down spelunking instead of grinding meat like I had planned... Something crazy happened down around -30 to -38, and it must be documented for science.

I think somebody else ran into something like that.  It is probably an ocean of water emptying into an ocean of magma, producing obsidian that then collapses.

Only vaguely. Made of the same substance and put to the same use, but a bit like comparing a castle and a doublewide trailer.

You were right. I sent a lone miner down into the depths, and came across a most magnificent sight: a giant chasm into which numerous bodies of water were pouring down into magma at the bottom. Pics, if anyone's interested:

The top of the chasm tube, on z -27:

The first waterfall, on -31. There's more on the level below.

Water splashing down on -33.

-36 is where the obsidian obsidian cap (or whatever you want to call it) starts. You can see water going off the edge of the map on the right. It gets there from tiny passages on the level above.

-37 is the bottom of the obsidian cap.

Oh man, that's awesome. once things settle down you need to make an adventurer fort.

Actually, by the time I took those screen shots (and my miner made it down far enough to breach that cavern), the obsidan casting was finished. I'm tempted to make a fortress suspended above that chasm.
