Special message for when dwarves raid caravans for food.
« on: December 21, 2007, 08:09:00 am »

I was glancing at this old thread when I had an idea:

Why not have the game give the player a message whenever their dwarves raid a caravan for food like that?  Something like "Hungry dwarves have stolen food from the human caravan!"  A message that tells the player both what's happened, and why it happened.

There are two reasons for this.  One, multiple players have not noticed it happening and assumed it was a bug; and two, more importantly, it's a significant event that will be unexpected for new players and will eventually require some action on the player's part (smoothing over relations with the traders, paying damages, or dealing with angry offended races, whatever.)  It really makes sense for the player to be informed that it happened.

I think this could most easily be handled in the trade depot by having the first screen consist of a line like "We have suffered losses in your lands.  What is your response."
p: pay recompenses: (whereupon the broker selects goods to pay the caravan for their losses and to improve their mood)
s: seize entire caravan (just like trade screen)
d: deny responsibility for stolen goods (like it is now, where we don't pay for stolen goods and just trade normally.)

With corresponding diplomatic outcomes.
Of course this could also apply to protecting the caravans from dangerous animals.  what if we had to pay 10k monies for the death of a guard?  After all, historically, once merchants arrive in our lands they SHOULD be under our protection (at least nominally)

I approve of many things that could make trade more interesting.

I like these ideas - however, instead of '10k monies' for the death of a guard, perhaps make it a small penalty to start with, and either rise with each succesive death (total, meaning the sum of all deaths over the years), or simply rising the price depending on how long the traders have been visiting you (after six years of vists, they'd expect you to have /some/ defenses ready for them).

And suddenly, I'm compelled to make a tower defense mod...

10k was an example rather than a suggestion, but I do like your suggestions as to how to determine the costs.  My guess was that the guards normally pick the first fights, and have fairly valuable equipment which you would get to keep (and thus, pay through the nose for it) and of course, trader/guard deaths means its going to cost more to have traders come out to your fortress.  Yes, I like this plan.

To make it truly interesting, we need to have irregular bandits implemented.  Goblins that show up, NOT to siege the castle, but to raid/loot the caravans.  Make them somewhat difficult to protect.  That will make tundra maps even MORE difficult, having to rush out to escort in the traders.
