Rowanas is basically right.

I don't know how many have actually done manual labor like cutting down a tree with an axe or driving a wedge or something else with a mallet.   The only thing your are really doing after a swing has connected(axe or mallet) is preventing it from bouncing away wildly.  In the swing leading to the moment of impact can perhaps best be described as drawing the head to the target.  Most of the power of a swing comes from momentum, not from the strength of the user, though that does play a part in it(stronger user = ~more accurate & faster swing OR shorter swing arc).

Impulse calculations won't really work well in DF as one of the bodies involved in the impact is "soft"(except for mining, as the pick striking the rock would be fine).  Either energy or force calculations are needed, maybe even a combination of the two.
