Follow on from this thread http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=62461.0. Add an option somewhere that allows the player to display all materials of a certain type as a single entry.
e.g. all gem types just appear as "gems" when trying to cut or encrust something, all leather cloaks just appear as "leather cloak" instead of 50 different types of leather cloak.

Possibly this option could be implemented with a hot key in stores that will toggle this setting just for this screen, and generalised workshop orders that operate on any material of a certain type.
e.g. in the stores screen you press "c" and all different types of leather appear just as "leather", all different types of wood appear just as "wood). In the gem workshop you have option "cut gems of any type", "encrust with gems of any type", at the top, as well as the specialised orders below these.

It's a very good idea.
