Seconding the request for worldgen, and a point in the right direction towards the site itself.

Thus far I've gotten a pipe like this every time I've embarked on a volcano.

The first one was like yours, stretching OVER the mountain itself and being just a giant spire filled with flamey gooey death.

My current site that I'm toying with has an actual volcano formation though, with the entire pipe encased in a 50+ z-level tall aboveground mountain, and going down another 100+ z-levels before being hidden by the fog of war effect.

I'm building my fort on top of said volcano. :D

I'm curious to know if the magma will replenish from the pipe.

It seems easier to breach magma without dying nowadays, set a novice engraver to carve out a fortification in the side and he should survive.

You don't really need the worldgen.  Most of the default worldgens have at least 1 volcano required.  Go to that volcano and it will be very similar to this one.

My current fortress is built on and around something like that. I was shocked when I was able to cap the thing without every seeing an Imp.

Not only does it replenish, but it seems that they replenish at a much faster rate than the volcanoes/magma pipes in 40d.

Maybe that's why the pipe is uniformly shaped, the "magma sea" tiles that generate magma may have some flag that trigger them to generate up to a certain height.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

Same, thought I've embarked on 3. All 3 broke the surface, though one was at the same level as the mountain(So you could actually walk to the top) while the other two had a 'chimney' like the OP's where they strech some 30 Z-levels up in the air with no ramps to access the top. Volcanoes are weird in 2010.

I have yet to encounter a subterrainian magma pipe, though.

By my calculations, your pipe there should be approximately 189 z-levels, give or take a few.

It isn't just volcanoes. I embarked next to a river near a steep cliff, and the river projected out about 12 tiles, just the width of the river. Underneath was a little hollow area. It'd have been a very impressive setup if not for projecting without rhyme or reason from the cliff face.
