New drinks
« on: April 09, 2010, 05:09:37 pm »

I'm working on coffee and tea for DF2010 (Above and below ground versions)
So, my questions are:
Can I set a milled product to be brewable? (coffee grounds)
Can I "brew" non-alcoholic drinks, or would Dwarven coffee (and tea) be spiked?

For the millable, I don't know. However, all dwarven drinks are spiked, so your coffee and tea would be also.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

I think you can create a custom reaction, I just don't have a clue about how to do it...
But I imagine something like this:

Coffee grain > Coffee powder > Coffee shop using the custom reaction (or even the still itself) > Coffee Barrel

Oh lord. A Dwarven Starbucks.

We're doomed.

I actually thought it would be fun if DF had a more complex brewing process. Since you don't make beers with a still anyways, maybe we could work up a proper brewery.
It would be cool if it were more like cooking, where you could get a Dwarven Ale flavored bittered with Cave Hops and other herbs. Of course there is no reason you couldn't brew plain Dwarven Ale, it just wouldn't be as valuable or taste as good.

It's also worth noting that the game has no notion of what an alcoholic drink is. No beverages will get dwarves drunk, and children will be allowed to drink whatever they please.

I still think that the whole fortress should be flooded with magma the moment you try dividing by zero.
This could be a handy way of teaching preschool children mathematics.

Hm. If we can make custom reactions now, that gives me an Idea....
Dwarven Coffee + Dwarven Sugar + Dwarven Milk = Dwarven Latte!

Lattes? LATTES?! That's a fucking elf drink! To the magma pits with him!

In all seriousness, some more custom reactions for specific food and drink would be great. Especially since we can make reactions for the kitchen.
