Possible megaproject, DAC
« on: April 20, 2010, 04:24:04 am »

I was just pondering something:

I am sure dwarves are interested in getting a better understanding on how their world works and how it has been created. So, with adamantine being such an unusual material... I wonder what would happen if two boulders of adamantine crash into each other at very high speed.

How about embarking on a 10x10 site and building two large underground coils with water being pumped into different directions. then dump adamantine in both coils and let the adamantine crash together somewhere... who knows, maybe material created during the impact might tell us more about our past.

...or it might turn into super-slade, dense enough to suck the world in...

The dwarven adamantine collider.

(Maybe i shouldn't have listened to DF talk #8 XD)

it's a neat thought, but nothing whatsoever would happen :/

Psh.  What would happen is that you'd have a friggin' Dwarvan Adamantine Collider.

Completely impractical to achieve, with little chance of success, and no reward even if everything went according to plan.

Yes, it's a perfect idea for Dwarf Fortress :)

More pressure! Make it so pressurized that the stream can cut bronze, damnit! At least five pumps per side.

Would the pressure not be introduced by adding the Floodgates? Pull switch, flood gates open and water exits at incredible force, correct?

Of course after the adamantine tests, others must be conducted. Like what happens if you collide an elf and a Dragon?

What is this, a therapy session? We don't need to console someone because they're upset about a fucking video game. Grow a beard, son, and take off those elf ears!

Pumps create pressure.  More pumps = more pressure.

And no, 5 pumps per side are not enough.  We need a collision at near light speed ... which is roughly 20 tiles per step, according to my highly accurate calculations that I won't show you ever.

I almost called it. I was thinking Dwarven Atom Collider, which consists of dropping a dwarf 40 z-levels onto another in search of the rare Urist boson.

Sadly there's one issue with this: Water pressure is kinky. I recall reading a long and winding thread at 4-chan about the construction of a large elf collider, and even if they used the pressure of the sea itself (and we do know it is pressurized enough to squeeze dwarves through walls) the elves only moved a few tiles.

Maybe using the potential of our fantastic new 450 z level sites to bring dumped dwarves, elves specially, and goblins to terminal speeds (or atmospheric re-entry speeds!) would lead to more interesting effects. Obviously so said mega-drop tower should be done of lavish and pointless materials, featiure exquisite design, and have flowing water in each of the 450 levels and other usless fantastic features (maybe make the testing chamber out of pitchblende.. or crystal glass...)

I'm specially interested in measuring ratio between the average dismembration rate (ADR) and mean distance of flung appendages (DFA) of goblins.

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.
