Have to say I love the changes in the new version (esp new underground) but a few things are slightly irritating. The military screen has been done to death already but I do like the concepts of squads and their schedules, I just think it needs tweaking to bring it back to the usefulness of the previous version,
- let the player decide whether a squad is full time militia, part time militia or militia at need. This would dictate whether they tote their armor and weapons around with them on the job, what their profession is (no more switching back and forth from military professions all the time with the bad thoughts it incurs), and whether they run off to do their old jobs. If I have a standing army, I want those guys active, training, eating and sleeping on the job, ready to respond, not running off to cut wood every 5 seconds. A part time militia would do that - split their time between civilian lives and military training.
- otherwise set an option to allow a player to 'always display military dwarves as military professions' - and group them together in the unit list by their squads!
- give the player an option how and when dwarves (military or no) will use their food and water. I dont exactly know when they do it right now, but they'll let themselves get much hungrier and thirstier before they drink. Could you allow an option to dictate when they use it (Drink when thirsty, drink when very thirsty, etc?). Or even 'eat food from backpack first or save food from backpack until starving' kind of thing. If dwarves slow down when they are hungry and thirsty, wouldnt you want them to take a break to eat and drink if it is convenient?
- put the options menu under another key or at least capital O ( not sure if that's bound already )... I'm forever accidentally hitting it on the way to the stockpiles menu and switching some option on or off.. a surprise for later!
and now the question - how do you set a squad to a 'break' in the schedule? eg: they take a holiday over winter?
Cheers!
