"Its guts is dented"
« on: April 09, 2010, 05:15:43 am »

After a forgotten beast got into a fight with some olm men, one of the listed wounds is "Its guts is dented".  This might make sense technically, depending on the exact definition of "dented", but it sure sounds weird.

(Not sure if this bug or not, so filing it as a suggestion)

Skin gets "dented" sure, which I'm not sure I understand. How does a person have dented skin without any other injuries ever being sustained?

I think he is talking about the grammatical error of "guts" and "is".

I'd have said the oddity was more in the choice of word "dented," which usually applies to things like cars from the 80's moreso than dwarve's innards. Bruised, gashed, ripped, torn, sure...

Wait, is it the forgotten beast who got that "dented" wound?
If it is, what is the forgotten beast made of?  It might make sense if it's made of metal.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

If I might...
Putting aside the question of whether one's innards, guts, etc can even be dented, we have a simple grammatical oddity here.
"Its guts are dented."
I imagine an autopsy of the beast post-killing, a butcher-dwarf looking at its spleen.
"Huh, never seen one that shape before," he'd say. "Almost like it were... dented."

If it was a forgotten beast, then maybe it's guts are made from a material that can get dents.

They can have stone kin and vomit blood, after all.

I checked the beast out in legends mode, and it there isn't anything about it being made of metal/glass/vomit/fire/etc, so I assume that it's made of ordinary flesh (ordinary for a forgotten beast, that is).  It also has a fractured trunk, so maybe forgotten beasts have flesh with weird enough properties that it can be dented.

You could report this to the bug tracker as a bug Khym, although there is a general bug right now enclosing all of the plural-related errors relating to creature descriptions.

http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=39

If you get a chance, please just add this specific case to the notes of the above bug, to control the number of open tickets!

If you want to report oddly fractured body parts, may I recommend http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=651 (as Khym already found)

Thanks!
