The first time I decided to actually trade with the elves, I found they brought be some cages. Wondering what animals they had brought me, I was surprised to discover they had an elephant corpse and a chimpanzee corpse

what were the prices of the cages?

if it was really high get the catapults out when you next see them

I remember a post where someone said the elves sold him an injured tiger, including brain and spine injuries that never heal. Perhaps the damaged goods the elves brought with them were so badly injured that they died on the way to your fort?

Are you playing with weather on?

I'm pretty sure there is a known bug regarding the well being of livestock being carried on traders caravans. I was thinking I read that weather might be freezing or cooking the animals on the trip.

I can not find the thread but it also involved the traders showing up over-weight because when they start thier trip live animals in cages do not count towards the weight carried by the caravan , but after they die the corpse does.

it has to do with temperature, not weather

when animals are brought into climates they cant handle, they die(happened in previous version too)

Quite right. I did mean temperatures.
(which I also have to toggle off to get 30 fps)
