what happened to the space bar?
« on: April 06, 2010, 10:15:06 am »

This has probably already been requested, but could we please get the space bar back as the 'cancel' or 'back' button on every screen?  and also since the space bar doesn't work there is currently no way to go back from the embark screen so once you hit start playing and pick a map you are stuck there until you embark the fortress at which point you can abandon (esc does not work on this screen anymore either).

You can set the controls in the game options or in the interface text file. If you do it through the esc menu, make sure to export to raws once you've made your changes.

The change was because we had people moaning about the unintuitive interface, specifically how on one page, space cancelled, on another it was esc, and a third was F9. As such, Toady consolidated them all as esc.

Of course, now all the old players change their keybindings back because we have already got the muscle memory. Just can't win I suppose :P

I, for one, changed it back because it's unnecessarily irritating in my eyes to use a key so far away from the others. Space is right in the middle of the keyboard, Esc is way up in the top-left corner.

Unfortunately, changing it to space becomes an issue in string inputs, such as the job manager, where typing "Wooden Barrel" will kick you back to the list of jobs and then remove the top two. :/

That sounds like a bug.  If an input has focus, the interface screen shouldn't intercept the spacebar.

Legends mode already works fine with the "press button to begin entering string -> space operates as input -> press button to stop entering string -> space operates as 'back'", maybe something like that could be implemented for the manager/etc.?  That would still leave the squad control screen not pausing, but maybe that should just pause by default.  So many other things do.

You do know that the new ESC key as the cancel button is only a default setting and can be altered right?
