Rhenayas Titanium/Kroll Process
« on: April 04, 2010, 08:59:56 am »

While browsing the new raws i found toadys remark on the titanium, so i find its not that much more complex as it is with steel and made the reactions on my own. titan is a little stronger than steel and more expensive too... also eats up a lot of coal in the processing

for reaction_smelter.txt

and of course add the reactions to your entity:

From "Angroshs Kinder" Das schwarze Auge Zwergenhandbuch - (Angrosh Children, the dark eye, german pen&paper, dwarven handbook):

There's a reason there's not a reaction for it in the raws: Processing requires chemicals (such as chlorine) that wouldn't be available with Dwarf Fortress technology, and is expensive even for us with the processes we have available. (Despite the fact that titanium ores are fairly common. In fact, most titanium ore isn't refined into titanium, but rather used as a white pigment in paints and such, because refining titanium is so difficult). I'm working on modding in Titanium as an alchemical product, though...

Furthermore, from what I've been able to find out on the Internet, pure titanium isn't quite as strong as you've made it (a bit weaker than steel, with half the density). There are several alloys of Titanium that are that strong, but they'd require other metals that are difficult or impossible to produce with DF technology (such as aluminum and vanadium).

and thats why its just a mod i found to be nice... i know its not perfect (ie: i use flux instead of chloride and magnesium) but i found it to be a nice option. and hell this is a damn magic world with dragons and stuff, i dont think every reaction must be in perfect sense :p also with the current amount of flux and magnetite i found in every fortress my titanium wouldnt be that much of an impact ;) (as rutile/ilmenite is quite rare compared even to gold) but its a neat more complex reaction especially for ilmenite which even gets us iron :p

I tend to mod in Mithril as a producible but expensive alternative to Adamantium.
Made from Aluminum bars, along with a handful of other mostly-useless but somewhat-rare ores, a whole lot of coal, and flux.
That's in 40d, probably going to make it more complicated when I do it in df2010.

In df2010, due to the new importance of weight on hammer effectiveness, I plan on modding in a Super-dense-ium, made from Platinum bars, pitchblende, a slew of other heavy metals I find in the raws, and a whole lot of coal and flux.  Given the new custom moddable workshops, it would be fun to make a specialized workshop for grinding tungsten ore into powder for adding into the mix.

Makes for more fun, keeping powerful materials complicated and expensive to produce, and keeping their end value lower than the value of their components.
Also, never make something quite as good as Adamantium, so it stays special.

Right now no time for df2010 or anything else, health problems.

i was thinking about the chloride/magnesium steps too, but i didnt find anything good stone for that to make it more complex... something to use the alchemy skill too and stuff ;)
