DF2010 Phantom Elves in the Trade Depot

Elves came around, so I move some stuff to the trade depot, etc. and end up making them angry (tried to trade them a pine crutch on accident) so I leave the screen and it says "merchants from yadayadahappyelfland have left" but they never leave. It claims there are no merchants trading at the depot, so I wait and wait and wait and wait, but they never leave. So I decided screw it, and deconstructed the depot, and watch as two elves and their warthogs run off. Mind you they had been they apparently "left" for little over a season before I said screw it

Were these elves trading much stuff?
In my current fort, the elves came with so much garbage, it took untill the elves showed up again the next year to move it all indoors(after the first elves met an unfortunate accident).
I've seen elves take nearly a whole season to pack up.
