Not sure if this is intended or not, so I've not put it onto Mantis (yet)

If you kill a male animal and a female animal they are counted separately.

e.g.

Kill two male buzzards and a female buzzard in one location, and the Kills screen (and legends screen) will list as
1 buzzard in the misty hills
2 buzzards in the misty hills

If you look at the detail screen for the weapon that made the kill then it is listed as 2 buzzards (male) and 1 buzzard (female) which makes me think that perhaps it is supposed to be keeping them separate.

However I'd have expected the legends totals to be either combined by animal type, or marked up as male/female in the same way that the weapon page is.

Not a big issue by any stretch of the imagination, but thought it worth a mention.
