Masterpieces and their status?
« on: April 02, 2010, 07:19:13 pm »

I've started a new fort recently, and with just the basics, I've a "proficient" carpenter and a "proficient" mason.

According to the wiki, in 40d, they each would have a 0.28% chance of making a masterpiece, yet my mason has made two, my carpenter has just made one himself.

Are masterpieces a LOT more common than they used to be?  I mean, 3 masterpieces by "proficient" is just waaaaaaaaaaay wayyyy unlikely.  What's a guy to do with a masterpiece bauxite door, masterpiece bed, and masterpiexe bauxite coffer?  Okay sure, I can make one dwarf really really happy somewhat, but it's borderline ridiculous.  As my dwarves become more skilled, they're going to make more of these.

Are they more common or am I just really really "lucky"?  If they are more common, have their general statistics changed at all?

I think, you got lucky. In my experience, they aren't more common. I had several masons, carpenters and mechanics around proficient skill and they produced no masterpiece at all for almost a year. Are you sure, they didn't level up? Some skills can go up really fast with mass production...

I looked at their stats after the production of the masterpiece.

Proficient.

Was the masterpiece made using a material that the dwarf liked, and was the object something the dwarf liked? Both of those are known to increase the effective skill level of a dwarf.

For example, if your dwarf likes beds and willow trees and you tell him to make a bed out of willow logs, he'll make a really nice bed out of it.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I have been surprised at the quality of the goods my beginning dorfs have created but I haven't really tracked it, and I haven't seen any masterpieces.
