I remember toady mentioning a human general who had giant eagles following him around, maybe this is how it happens.

On a similar note, I attacked this family of six Olm people. The last survivor actually turned friendly before he bled to death. I wonder if he surrendered or if it's a bug where he started chatting and getting along with my militia while fighting them.

EDIT: Or maybe he did a cool little Olm speech about vengeance with his last breath? DF is awesome...

I have had dwarves make figurines commemorating so-and-so legendary Human general taming an army of grizzly bears on his 5th journey through the wilds, so yes.

Yeah, for me it's been statues.  About every third statue my dwarves have carved has been of some human taming giant eagles.  I hope I get to meet some of these badasses, there are like three or four that are apparently reputed to be constantly accompanied by an entourage of giant eagles.

Yeah, maybe the dwarf did get attached to an actual wild animal, and it's just part of the code allowing for the mentioned wilderness animal training. I have no idea, honestly.
