The merchants that came to my fortress carried some decorated items with them. Some time passed, my fortress was ravaged by a Draltha (even though it did manage to kill a giant toad, a giant cave spider and a giant olm), and I abandoned.

So I thought it'd be interesting to check out the legends. There were three items in the 'art' section, and they were, as I noticed after better inspection, the decorations on the items the merchants had brought (and taken) with them.

The point that doesn't seem right, though, is that they seem to be listed to having been made at my fortress.

I do not think the traders go camping just outside, make their art and then head inside to give us credit for it.
