Favorite Proffessions as personality quirks
« on: March 31, 2010, 03:28:04 am »

Currently dwarves have a whole list of 'favorite' things, foods, gems, rocks, pets as part of their personality quirks.  And we also have a huge variety of professions that we can assign them to with no regard whatsoever for their personal preferences because they simply have none in the realm of jobs.  Adding a 'favorite' profession that a dwarf will get a bonus happy though from doing "Relished the opportunity to work at his life's calling".  The players still retains full control over setting professions and new migrants existing skills are only slightly more likely then random chance to be their favorites.  Also favorite professions should not be evenly distributed across all professions, just as many people dream of being janitors or burger flippers I imagine few dwarves dream of being lye makers or wood burners, their should be a clear tilt towards crafting and more 'elite' stuff particularly metal and gem crafting.  Favorite professions could serve as yet another way to distinguish dwarven culture from that of other races.

Isn't this already covered by material and item likes?

Dwarves should be happy if they can work on their favorite material or produce items they like.

I would imagine dwarves that likes wood and bolts would be very unhappy as miner or smith, fairly happy as carpenter/woodcutter/marskdwarf/bonecarver and happy as woodcrafter that makes tons of wooden bolts.

While I'm not sure I'd wish to be limited by randomly assigned desired professions, I could see some dwarves liking hunting or fishing recreationally if you allow them to.

You're correct, because in said profession the dwarf would be encountering items he likes more often.

That said, a preference for types of jobs might be suitable, or traits that generate happy thoughts when doing a job, i.e. an easygoing dwarf might get a happy thought/etc. from "idle" jobs like fishing, herb-picking, or bookkeeping.

No, material/item likes are clearly ment to be the appreciation of the decorative/ascetic nature of a material or the taste of a food-stuff and a dwarf gets happiness from owning or consuming them.

Everyone has a favorite food but everyone dose not like to cook, trying to apply the existing favorites as professions would lead to very absurd and distorted set of professions being liked, many professions like architect would never be desired or have absurdities like only enjoying architecture if the bridge is made from emeralds.  It's also just plain confusing for the player, they would have little if any hope of ever matching a dwarf with what they like and the effects would be for all practical matters random 'noise' in a dwarfs happiness.

He was saying that if the dwarf had a faviort and we just happen to decied to let them do it they would be even happier.  This doesn't meen that you would create unhappy thoughts if you gave them a different proffession.  The same as if you have a dwarf that likes dimanod encrusted steel doors who all because he has a simple stone door he doesn't have a whole range of unhappy thoughts instead if you ever manage to get a dimanod encrusted steel door he would just get estatic winever he used it.  I personally love this idea it's another way to give your dwarfs more happy thoughts if you wished there by preventing fortress killing tantrums.

In fact if you wanted to make it even more enteresting you could give them a personallty trait saying they hate a type of job and if you make them do it they would get unhappy.  Though that is just a thought.

Randomly assigned job likes are just that, random. Personality should play a role, otherwise cripplingly shy dwarves will occasionally just happen to enjoy managerial work.

I don't know, I suppose it'd have it's place but it's already hard enough to find suitable dwarves if you pick them by personality. It'd be even harder if you wanted the smith to actually like the job in addition to liking steel, platemail or being hardworking with an eye for quality.

Basically, micromanagement. I kind of do not want to interview my dwarves and do background checks before assigning them job.

I would really like if dwarves could volunteer jobs if we ever get into deeper job likes/dislikes:

a) Assign labors to named job "template"
b) Select number of "openings" for this template
c) Mark some dwarves as "candidates for new job"
d) Magic happens, best dwarves for job "volunteer".
